3 Indonesian Controversy Story That Happened in 2026

Many controversies happened in Indonesia, sparked massive debates across social media and public discussions. From controversial statements to social scandals, many issues quickly became nationwide conversations.

Social media played a major role in amplifying these events, allowing public reactions, criticism, and differing opinions to spread rapidly within hours. Several controversies also highlighted deeper concerns online social culture in Indonesian society.

As people continued to share opinions and reactions online, these incidents showed how easily a single act could trigger widespread public attention and divide public opinion across the country.

1. Lomba Cerdas Cermat (LCC)

The first story comes from an Intelectual Quiz Contest: 4 Pillars organized by People's Consultative Assembly of Republic Indonesia. During a final competition live stream in 9th May 2026 West Kalimantan Province, on their YouTube channel, an incident of injustice occurred (watch the stream here).

Once the MC has asked the question, team from Pontianak High School 1, answered the question correctly but was declared wrong by the judges. When the other team steals the turn and gives the same answer, the answer is corrected.

There was a protest by the Pontianak high school team, but it was rejected by two judges. The judges said that the articulation was off, some sentences were missing, and the MC opinion more hostile towards the contestant.

This clip quickly went viral on social media because it shows injustice, an incompetent judges, and the MC who seems biased. Many netizens are demanding justice for the Pontianak High School 1 team because they ended up losing the competition.

The viral report led the MPR to publicly apologize on May 12, 2026. The MPR will also evaluate all parties involved in the competition and dismiss the judges and MC that are incompetent.

One judges and the MC also issued apologies through their Instagram accounts. However, there are still calls from netizens to broadcasted their apology directly to Pontianak High School 1.

As a joke, many netizens saying “How could in an intelectual competition the judges aren’t?”

2. Mr. Rastam & Aisar Khaledd

Aisar Khaledd is a Malaysian content creator that helping people in needs and oftenly making content in Indonesia. Since April 2026, Aisar has often created content with an elderly man named Rastam (84).

Rastam heartbreaking story went viral, because every day, he eats nothing but rice and cassava leaves at his substandard home. Despite his limited situation, Rastam has managed to raise a child with Down syndrome.

Aisar helps Rastam in various way, until finally his house was renovated, and its unveiling was live streamed in his Youtube Channel on 1st May 2026. Everything was going well until, toward the end of the stream, Mr. Rastam’s daughter suddenly appeared (watch the stream here). 

Her appearance there was to ask Aisar for help in addressing his limitations in her middle age. She explained her sick condition, she couldn’t work, and she was just asking for money.

Aisar politely declined the request on the excuse that if he gave her the money, it would be spent right away. Aisar offered to provide the woman with startup business funds, but the woman refused.

The woman clearly replied that she just wanted to stay home, sleeping, and eat for free. In that moment, Aisar is quite confused since her condition seems to be doing just fine and her story feels like a made up story.

From her behavior, it also shows that she does not respect her father, she interupted her father’s words, and ignores Mr. Rastam’s opinion. At this point, Aisar seemed very reluctant to respond. 

Even Mr Rastam who had been mostly silent from the start, laughed and clapped his hands in a sarcastic reaction to all the lies his daughter had told. Until the oldest son of Mr Rastam showed up and confirm that the daughter is the troublemaker in their family, also confirmed by their neighbor. 

Alhough her house was right next her father’s, she was the one who neglected Mr Rastam. 

In the end, Aisar refused the daughter’s request and gave the money to the eldest son, who was willing to use it as startup capital.

In Addition, The fact that the daughter was living in the house and on the land given by Mr Rastam only added to netizens' anger. 

Netizens who initially felt empathy for Mr. Rastam have instead turned their criticism toward his daughter, accusing her of a liar, being lazy, and deserves to be poor because only wants easy money without any hard work.

3. Gerd Does Not Cause Heart Disease

This controversy started by thread post of @dr.bobbyjantung, who is the only one doctor specialist sports cardiologist in Indonesia. One post in 24th January, he said "GERD ga bikin sakit jantung. Udah itu aja." translated "GERD does not cause heart dissease. Thats it." (original post here)

At first, the post drawn a lot of criticism from netizens who disagree with it. Some people gave advice as if they were heart specialists, and some even went so far as to bully and mock the doctor.

Some doctors who tried to defend Dr. Bobby were also attacked by netizens whose backgrounds were unclear. This happens because many cases of GERD cause chest pain, and uninformed netizens believe that GERD can cause heart disease. 

In fact, according to journal and case reports, there is no evidence that GERD can cause heart disease. Over time, the critical comments from netizens have begun to be covered by those from more understanding netizens.

Now, the top comments being displayed are only from netizens who joking about how funny the previous missinformed Indonesian netizens was.
