Why “Ikan Kontol” Became Viral in Indonesia
Although the phrase has existed informally for a long time, it became widely known in early 2017 due to a viral video involving a child with Mr Jokowi, the President of Indonesia at that time.
The incident took place on January 26, 2017, during a social event at an orphanage attended by President Joko Widodo. During the event, there was a quiz session where participants could win prizes by answering questions correctly.
In a video, showing a young student was asked by Mr. President to name four types of fish in order to win a bicycle. The child confidently answered the first 3 fish ; catfish, whale, and anchovy very clearly.
However, when mentioning the fourth fish, instead of saying “ikan tongkol”//"mackarel fish", the child mistakenly said “ikan kontol”/"d*ck fish"
This unexpected answer caused the audience to burst into laughter. The situation became even more awkward when the president, smiling calmly, asked the child to repeat the answer.
And the child said “ikan kontol” again for the second time. Again, Mr. President just smiling and asking the child to repeat the correct answer.
On the third attempt, the child finally corrected the answer to “ikan tongkol” and still won the prize.
Public Reaction and Clarification
After the clip went viral, many Indonesian netizens shared and discussed the video. Some tried to find out more about the child, later identified as Maulana, a third-grade elementary school student.
It was later revealed that the child had dyslexia, a learning disorder that can affect reading, speaking, and word recognition. Following this, the orphanage requested the public to stop spreading the video and avoid making fun of the child.
