Son Sells The Rooftop Tiles of His Mom's House for His Girlfriend

Son Sells The Rooftop Tiles of His Mom's House for His Girlfriend

In late November 2021, a shocking and unusual case from Bantul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia went viral across social media. A 25-year-old man, Dwi Rahayu Saputro, was reported by his own mother, Paliyem (53), for allegedly selling their household furniture without permission.

According to reports, the man sold various household items—including chairs, tables, doors, and even rooftop tiles—because his girlfriend frequently demanded money. At the time, he was unemployed and struggled to meet her expectations.

Even his motorcycle, which was intended for work as an online driver, was taken by his girlfriend. This case quickly caught the attention of Indonesian netizens due to its bizarre and emotional circumstances.

At first, his mother tolerated the son's behavior, despite her job as a housemaid and limited income. However, the situation escalated when one day, she returned home to find their house without a roof. Shocked and overwhelmed, she decided to report her son to the police.

Press Conference Sparks Public Reaction

What made this Indonesian story even more widely discussed was a press conference video that spread online. During questioning, when asked by police who did the son loved more—his mother or his girlfriend—he replied, “I love my girlfriend more.”

His response didn’t stop there. When asked if he had a final message for his girlfriend, he said, “Stay healthy, take care of yourself, and don’t forget to eat.” These statements triggered a wave of reactions from Indonesian netizens, many of whom found the situation both shocking and strangely humorous.

Netizens React to the Strange Relationship

The public became even more curious after learning that the relationship had only lasted one month. Many netizens described the man as naïve, pointing out that he did not fully understand his actions or even basic concepts like long-distance relationships.

It was also revealed that he had not informed his girlfriend about his legal situation. Despite the controversy, the story also showed a sense of community.

Local residents and even the Bantul regent stepped in to help the mother rebuild her home. Donations included money, a new stove, and replacement furniture such as chairs, tables, doors, and cupboards.

Legal Process and Temporary Resolution

The legal case continued until the mother eventually withdrew her lawsuit. She stated that she still loved her son and chose forgiveness after he promised to change.

Following guidance and counseling from the police, the man was officially released on January 11, 2022.

Repeat Offense Makes the Case Go Viral Again

Unfortunately, the situation did not end there. Just three days after his release, on January 14, 2022, the man reportedly sold the stove that had been donated by the Bantul regent. He also attempted to sell other household items again, but neighbors intervened to stop him.

In an even more troubling incident, he allegedly assaulted his mother when she refused to give him 1 million rupiah (around $65). This caused the case to go viral once again, raising serious concerns among the public.

Public Concern Over Mental Health and Legal Consequences

As the case escalated, the mother filed another report against her son for theft of family property. Authorities also began investigating the girlfriend’s involvement, with both facing potential prison sentences of up to five years.

This viral Bantul case has sparked widespread discussion in Indonesia, particularly about mental health, toxic relationships, and family dynamics. Many netizens have questioned the man’s psychological condition and called for further investigation into the influence of his girlfriend.

Many people have also guessed the ending—that the man has a mental disorder because he can’t distinguish between primary and tertiary needs.
