The early school start time was initiated by the regional government, led by the governor of East Nusa Tenggara along with the local Education and Culture Office.

The implementation of the 5 AM school rule went viral on social media, drawing strong reactions from Indonesian netizens. Many students, parents, and local residents in Kupang openly rejected the policy.

They concerns raised issues about sleep deprivation among students, wich possibly increased risk of mental health issues, stress and depression.

It's also risking the learning performance and concentration of the students. The safety of the students while going to school before dawn also mentioned. 

The regulation also possibly disrupt the family routines and cultural habits.

Many critics also questioned the lack of scientific research supporting the regulation. Comparisons were frequently made to more developed countries, where school typically starts between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m.

Government Response

In response to growing criticism, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology began coordinating with regional authorities in East Nusa Tenggara.

The ministry aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the policy and consider feedback from the public, educators, and experts.

Policy Revocation

After months of controversy and evaluation, the 5 AM school policy was officially revoked in September 2023 by the governor of East Nusa Tenggara.

Schools in Kupang have since returned to standard operating hours, with classes starting at 7:15 a.m., aligning with national norms.
