AI-Generated Fake Response to Citizen Complaint In Government APP

AI-Generated Fake Response to Citizen Complaint In Government APP

A controversy has emerged surrounding JAKI (Jakarta Kini), an official application launched by the Jakarta Provincial Government to provide integrated public services and real-time city information.

What Is the JAKI App?

The JAKI app serves as a digital hub for Jakarta residents, offering updates on traffic conditions, weather, flooding, food prices, waste management, road damage etc.. One of its key features allows citizens to report urban issues directly to authorities, making it a vital tool for civic engagement.

Viral Complaint About Illegal Parking

On April 6, a Jakarta resident raised a complaint about illegal parking near their home through a viral thread posted by @seinsh. The resident claimed he has reporting the issue to local authorities multiple times, no serious action had been taken.

Hoping for a better response from higher authorities, the issue was submitted through the JAKI app.

AI-Generated Response Sparks Controversy

Instead of a proper resolution, the user received a response containing an AI-generated image claiming that the illegally parked vehicle had been removed. However, the image quickly raised suspicions.

Upon closer inspection, inconsistencies were evident, the same individual appeared unchanged in same images, a passing motorcycle remained in the exact same position, and the shadows of the car were still visible unedited.

These details strongly indicated that the image had been artificially manipulated rather than reflecting a real-world resolution.

Government Investigation and  Action

The Governor of Jakarta responded to the incident, stating that a formal investigation would be conducted if the claims were proven true.

Following the investigation, it was confirmed that an officer that handled the app had submitted an AI-edited image to falsely indicate that the issue had been resolved. SP 1 in English translated as of Letter of Warning level 1 - has given to them as a form of punishment and warning.

In response to uprising public backlash, authorities took swift action. The illegal parking issue was addressed on the same day the controversy gained traction, ensuring that the vehicles were properly removed.

Public Trust and Digital Governance Concerns

This incident has raised serious concerns about the use of artificial intelligence in public service systems. While apps like JAKI are designed to improve transparency and efficiency, misuse of AI-generated content can undermine public trust.

The case highlights the importance of accountability and proper oversight in digital governance, especially as governments increasingly adopt AI technologies in their operations.

Final Conclusion

The JAKI app controversy serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of relying on AI without proper verification. While technology can enhance public services, human responsibility remains crucial to ensure accuracy, transparency, and trust.
